Kitchen Cabinet & Shoe Cabinet with Built-In Sink — Pavillion Resort, Teluk Kumbar, Penang
Location: Pavillion Resort, Teluk Kumbar, Bayan Lepas, Penang
Scope: Dry kitchen cabinet + entrance shoe cabinet with built-in sink
Brand: Kabinet Sifu
When this homeowner in Pavillion Resort, Teluk Kumbar came to Kabinet Sifu, the brief was simple to say but not simple to build: a kitchen that stays visually clean at all times, and an entrance area that solves two everyday headaches — where to wash hands after coming home, and where to hide the robot vacuum without it sitting in the middle of the kitchen floor.
Here's how we approached the challenge, the solutions we proposed, and the materials we used to make sure the result lasts.
The Challenge
Three specific requirements shaped this project:
- A super clean and tidy kitchen look. The client wanted a dry kitchen with minimal visual clutter — no exposed gaps, no mismatched panels, and a countertop that stays practical for daily use.
- A sink at the entrance, built into the shoe cabinet. Instead of a separate wash basin taking up wall space, the client wanted family members and guests to be able to wash their hands right at the entrance, integrated into the shoe cabinet itself.
- A home for the robot vacuum. The robot vacuum needed a permanent spot to dock and charge, without leaving cables or a charging pad exposed in the kitchen.
The technical difficulty here is that a shoe cabinet with a wet sink area sits close to daily splashing and humidity — a zone that ordinary cabinet carcass material is not built to handle long-term.
The Solution
1. A dry kitchen built for a clean, consistent look
The kitchen cabinet was built using white melamine ABS edge carcass for a smooth, consistent finish, paired with solid plywood laminate doors and panels for durability. The countertop uses sintered stone, chosen for its clean, uniform surface that suits the "super clean and tidy" brief the client asked for.
2. A hand-wash sink built into the shoe cabinet
We proposed integrating a compact sink directly into the shoe cabinet at the entrance. This gives family members and guests a convenient spot to wash their hands immediately upon entering — without walking through the house first. Because this section is directly exposed to water, we upgraded the sink cabinet carcass to foam board, a fully waterproof and fire-resistant material, instead of standard board. This was a deliberate material decision to prevent swelling, warping, or moisture damage over the long term.
The rest of the shoe cabinet uses a solid plywood carcass with colour laminate doors and panels, giving it a look consistent with the rest of the entrance area while keeping the dry storage sections separate from the wet sink zone.
Hardware built for daily, long-term use
Beyond the panels and carcass, hardware is what determines how a cabinet feels day to day. For this project, we used DTC soft-closing hinges on the cabinet doors and a BLUM soft-closing drawer system for the drawers, so every door and drawer closes quietly and smoothly instead of slamming — a small detail that makes a noticeable difference in daily use and helps protect the cabinet joints over time.
3. A built-in charging station for the robot vacuum
Instead of leaving the robot vacuum and its charging dock exposed on the kitchen floor, we designed a dedicated built-in charging station within the kitchen cabinet base. The robot vacuum now docks out of sight, keeping the kitchen floor and visual line clean while the vacuum stays fully functional and ready to use.
The Result
The client was satisfied with the outcome — a kitchen that keeps its clean, tidy appearance, and an entrance area that now does double duty as a shoe storage and hand-wash point, without compromising on durability where it matters most.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a sink really be built into a shoe cabinet?
Yes. In this Teluk Kumbar project, we built a hand-wash sink directly into the shoe cabinet at the entrance. The key is using a waterproof, fire-resistant carcass material (such as foam board) specifically for the section around the sink, so the cabinet holds up to daily water exposure without swelling or warping.
Is a sink in the shoe cabinet a hygienic idea for Malaysian homes?
Many homeowners like having a wash point right at the entrance so family members and guests can clean their hands before touching other parts of the house. It's a practical layout choice, especially for homes with young children or frequent guests.
Can you build a charging station for a robot vacuum into kitchen cabinets?
Yes. We designed a dedicated space within the kitchen cabinet base for the robot vacuum to dock and charge. This keeps the charging dock and cables out of sight while the vacuum remains fully accessible and functional.
What cabinet material is best for areas exposed to water, like a sink cabinet?
Standard particle board or MDF carcass is not recommended for wet areas, as it can swell or warp over time. For this project, we used foam board carcass for the sink section specifically because it is waterproof and fire-resistant, making it more suitable for long-term use in a wet zone.
What hinges and drawer system do you use for kitchen and shoe cabinets?
For this project, we used DTC soft-closing hinges for the cabinet doors and a BLUM soft-closing drawer system for the drawers. Both are designed to close quietly and smoothly, reducing wear on the cabinet over years of daily use.
